TRAP-JENSEN, JENS, AND NIELS A. LASSEN. Restricted d@xsion in skeletal muscle capillaries in man. Am. J. Physiol. 220(2) : 371-376. 197 1 .-The skeletal muscle capillary permeabilities for EDTA51Cr and inulin were measured simultaneously by means of the indicator-diffusion technique in the exercising forearm of nine normal human adults. The capillary permeability data were expressed as the capillary diffusion capacity, CDC, defined as the unidirectional flux of permeable tracer across the capillary membrane per 100 g tissue per unit concentration difference across the capillary. The average values for CDCnnTA-cr and CDCinulin amounted to 3.26 =t 0.74 (SD) and 0.51 =t 0.16 (SD) moles/l00 g emin per mole/ml, respectively, for plasma flows of 14.1 * 6.8 (SD) ml/100 g* min. The ratio between the mean CDC values EDTA-51Cr/inulin was found to be 6.39 =t 0.64 (SEM). This value highly exceeds the ratio value of 3.2 between the corresponding free-diffusion constants in water. The finding indicates the existence of restriction to diffusion for smaller hydrophilic molecules over the skeletal muscle capillary membrane. The finding is in accordance with the morphological observations of apertures with a narrowest diameter of ca. 40 A situated between the skeletal muscle capillary endothelial cells.

The Effects of Eight Weeks High Intensity Intermittent Training and Blood Flow Restricted on Angiogenic Markers of Muscle in Male Runners

Background. Due to the lack of sufficient information about the interactive effects of high intensity intermittent training (HIIT) and blood flow restricted (BFR) exercises on angiogenic variables of skeletal muscle, it seems that integration these training models can influence skeletal muscle angiogenesis in the long term over the individual application of each of these training methods. Obje...

A theoretical model for oxygen transport in skeletal muscle under conditions of high oxygen demand.

Oxygen transport from capillaries to exercising skeletal muscle is studied by use of a Krogh-type cylinder model. The goal is to predict oxygen consumption under conditions of high demand, on the basis of a consideration of transport processes occurring at the microvascular level. Effects of the decline in oxygen content of blood flowing along capillaries, intravascular resistance to oxygen dif...

Malleability of the system in overcoming limitations: functional elements.

Three different views can be found in the literature concerning the classical question in exercise physiology: what limits maximal oxygen uptake in man? Some authors believe that the limitation is the maximal rate of oxygen delivery by the cardiovascular system. Others argue that oxygen uptake is limited by the capillary bed or metabolic capacity of skeletal muscle, and the third line of though...

Solitary Psoas Muscle Metastasis of Gastroesphageal Junction Adenocarcinoma

Metastasis of gastroesphageal junction (GEJ) adenocarcinoma in skeletal muscle is rare and primary sites for skeletal muscle metastases are usually lung, renal and colorectal cancer. We have encountered with the first case report of solitary psoas muscle metastasis of GEJ adenocarcinoma. Here we describe a 65 years old man was diagnosed with GEJ adenocarcinoma in tertiary hospital, Tehran, Iran...
